Architect Tadao Ando has led the renovation of Sapporo’s iconic historical building and transformed it to be a place for people to enjoy reading and lounging, together with amazing pastries. This western styled building was built as the first ever library in Hokkaido back in 1926 and after that it was used as the first ever art museum in Hokkaido. More recently, the building was occupied as the Public Record Office and was not open to the public. However the renowned pastry shop ‘Kitakaro’ has re-opened it to the public, as its long-awaited, first-ever, ground level store.
